Lab-Grown Diamonds
Real diamonds. Better choice.
What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same chemical composition (pure carbon), the same crystal structure, the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), and the same optical properties as diamonds formed in the earth.
The only difference is origin. While mined diamonds form over billions of years deep within the earth, lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled laboratory environments using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond-growing process. The result is chemically, physically, and optically identical.
Not Simulants
Lab-grown diamonds should not be confused with diamond simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite. Simulants look similar but have different chemical compositions and physical properties. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — they just didn't come from a mine.
How They're Made
There are two primary methods for creating lab-grown diamonds:
HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature)
This method replicates the conditions deep within the earth where natural diamonds form. A small diamond seed is placed in carbon and subjected to extreme pressure (about 1.5 million pounds per square inch) and temperatures over 2,700°F. The carbon melts and crystallizes around the seed, forming a diamond.
CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)
A diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber and heated to around 1,400°F. Carbon-rich gases are introduced, and the carbon atoms gradually deposit onto the seed, building the diamond layer by layer. This method allows for exceptional control over the growing process.
Both methods produce genuine diamonds. SEMRA works with diamonds created using both processes, selecting stones based on quality rather than method.
Cut
The most important factor in a diamond's beauty. Cut determines how light interacts with the stone — its brilliance, fire, and sparkle. We select only excellent and ideal cuts.
Color
Diamond color is graded from D (colorless) to Z. SEMRA typically works with D–G color diamonds, ensuring stones appear white and bright in any setting.
Clarity
Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions or blemishes. We select VS2 clarity and above — stones that are eye-clean with no visible imperfections.
Carat
Carat is a measure of weight, not size. A well-cut diamond will appear larger than a poorly cut stone of the same carat weight. We prioritize cut over carat.
Why We Choose Lab-Grown
SEMRA works exclusively with lab-grown diamonds. Here's why:
Ethical Certainty
Lab-grown diamonds come with complete traceability. There's no question about origin, no concerns about conflict sourcing, and no human cost of extraction. You know exactly where your diamond came from.
Environmental Impact
Diamond mining requires moving massive amounts of earth and uses significant energy and water. Lab-grown diamonds have a substantially smaller environmental footprint, with no land disruption and lower overall resource consumption.
Better Value
Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 30–50% less than equivalent mined diamonds. This means you can choose a larger or higher-quality stone for your budget — or invest the difference elsewhere.
Identical Quality
Because lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to mined diamonds, there's no compromise on beauty, durability, or brilliance. They're graded using the same standards and will last just as long.
| Property | Lab-Grown Diamond | Mined Diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical Composition | Pure carbon | Pure carbon |
| Hardness | 10 (Mohs scale) | 10 (Mohs scale) |
| Optical Properties | Identical brilliance & fire | Identical brilliance & fire |
| Origin Traceability | Complete | Varies |
| Price | 30–50% less | Higher |
Can You Tell the Difference?
No. Lab-grown and mined diamonds are visually indistinguishable — even to trained gemologists using standard equipment. Only specialized laboratory instruments can detect the subtle differences in growth patterns that indicate a stone's origin.
When you wear a lab-grown diamond, no one can tell it wasn't mined. Because in every way that matters, it's the same stone.
Certification
All SEMRA diamonds 0.30 carats and above are certified by leading gemological laboratories, including:
- IGI (International Gemological Institute)
- GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
- GCAL (Gem Certification & Assurance Lab)
Certificates include detailed information about each stone's cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, along with confirmation of lab-grown origin.
Common Questions
Do lab-grown diamonds last forever?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds have the same durability as mined diamonds — they're the hardest natural material on earth. They won't fade, cloud, or change over time.
Will lab-grown diamonds hold their value?
Like all diamonds, lab-grown stones are not investment vehicles. Their value lies in their beauty and meaning, not resale potential. That said, the secondary market for lab-grown diamonds is developing as they become more widely accepted.
Can I insure lab-grown diamond jewelry?
Absolutely. Lab-grown diamonds are insured just like mined diamonds. We provide documentation and certification to facilitate appraisals and insurance coverage.
