Care Guide

Fine jewelry, made to last. Here's how to keep it that way.

To care for SEMRĀ jewelry, remove it before swimming, exercising, cleaning or sleeping, store each piece separately in its box or a soft pouch, and clean it gently with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. We also offer one complimentary professional cleaning and inspection each year.

Everyday care

Fine jewelry is resilient, not indestructible. The simplest rule: put your jewelry on last and take it off first. Apply lotion, perfume and hairspray before you put your pieces on, and take them off before anything involving chemicals, impact or water.

Wear

Take jewelry off to swim, exercise, clean or sleep. Chlorine, salt water and household chemicals can damage gold and dull a diamond's sparkle.

Store

Keep each piece in its SEMRĀ box or a soft pouch. Store pieces separately, since diamonds can scratch metal and even other diamonds.

Clean

Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush are all you need. Rinse well and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Inspect

Check prongs and clasps from time to time. If a stone feels loose or a prong looks bent, stop wearing the piece and contact us.

Cleaning at home

Pieces worn every day pick up oil from skin, lotion and soap, which dulls their shine. A gentle clean every few weeks brings it back.

  1. Soak the piece for 20–30 minutes in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, especially behind the stone and under the setting, where oil collects.
  3. Rinse in clean warm water, in a bowl or with the drain closed.
  4. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Avoid toothpaste, baking soda, bleach and paper towels, which can scratch or damage metal. Ultrasonic cleaners are generally safe for diamonds set in gold, but they can loosen stones in pavé or delicate settings. If you're unsure, ask us.

Caring for gold and platinum

SEMRĀ pieces are priced in 14K gold, which is harder and more resistant to scratches than higher-karat gold. 18K gold and platinum are available on request.

Yellow & rose gold

Polish gently with a soft jewelry cloth. Fine surface scratches are normal with daily wear and can be polished out.

White gold

White gold is finished with bright rhodium plating, which slowly wears with daily use and can let a warmer tone show through. A quick rhodium replating restores the white finish.

Platinum

Platinum doesn't wear away; over time it develops a soft satin patina. Many people love it, and it can be polished back to a high shine.

Chlorine

Chlorine in pools and hot tubs can weaken gold alloys over time. Always take your jewelry off before swimming.

Caring for diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are as hard as mined diamonds and need exactly the same care. Read more about them in our Diamond Guide.

  • Diamonds attract oil and dust. Clean them regularly to keep them bright.
  • Clean behind and beneath the stone, where light enters, as well as on top.
  • Diamonds are very hard but can chip if struck at the wrong angle. Take rings off for sports, the gym and heavy work.
  • Avoid touching the top of the stone; fingerprints leave a film that dulls sparkle.

Storing your pieces

  • Keep each piece in its SEMRĀ box or a soft pouch.
  • Fasten necklaces and bracelets so chains don't tangle.
  • Store away from humidity and direct sunlight.
  • Use a padded case when you travel.

What to avoid

  • Chlorine, hot tubs and salt water
  • Household cleaning products
  • Lotion, perfume and hairspray on your jewelry
  • Hard knocks during sports or heavy work
  • Abrasive surfaces and extreme heat

Once a year, we'll clean and inspect your SEMRĀ piece at no charge, at our Monroe showroom by appointment or by mail at your shipping expense. Regular inspections catch small issues before they become larger ones.

Jewelry care questions

How often should I clean my jewelry?

For pieces you wear every day, a gentle clean at home every few weeks, and a professional clean and inspection once a year. The yearly clean is complimentary for SEMRĀ pieces.

Can I wear my ring in the shower?

It's best not to. Soap leaves a film that dulls diamonds, and a wet ring can slip off. Take it off for swimming, hot tubs and the beach as well.

Can I sleep in my jewelry?

We recommend taking it off. Prongs can catch on fabric, and chains can tangle or break during the night.

Why does my white gold look slightly yellow?

White gold is finished with rhodium plating, which wears gradually with daily use. A rhodium replating restores the bright white finish.

Is an ultrasonic cleaner safe for my jewelry?

Generally yes for diamonds set in gold, but the vibration can loosen stones in pavé or delicate settings. If you're unsure, ask us before using one.

Do you offer free cleaning?

What should I do if a stone feels loose?

Stop wearing the piece, keep it somewhere safe and contact us. Stones that loosen because of a faulty setting are covered by our lifetime warranty.
